Fix Gears Tactics Crashes, Errors, Performance Issues

Nothing beats the pleasure of stuffing a chainsaw bayonet through the chest of a Locust drone. Going through the world of Gears of Sera from a top-down perspective in Gears Tactics feels surprisingly fluid. Sure – it’s not the 3rd person shooter we expect out of the Gears of War franchise, but it’s still a hell of a lot of fun.

But you know what really grinds my gears? My game crashing in the middle of an intense firefight. More than just losing my favorite squad member – I hate it when I can’t get to play my game smoothly.

Thankfully, I know a thing or two about troubleshooting. Though I wouldn’t know how to shoot a gun to kill a locust, I can tell you how to troubleshoot your game just so you can get it running.

Keep your armor on and your bayonet buzzing soldier. It’s time for us to tackle some troubleshooting tips for Gears Tactics!

Crashes Error Code GT102 and GT103

The biggest and most glaring issues that gamers face. Whether it’s a pre-game crash or a mid-game crash, The error “GT102” indicates the GPU has stopped communicating with Windows.

When this happens Windows will instruct the driver to go into recovery mode, which resets the GPU. When the GPU is reset the game receives an error that the GPU has been removed and shuts down.

here are a couple of troubleshooting tips that can solve your issues.

Check your PC Specs

Before buying Gears Tactics (or any game really) always, always check the minimum requirements. Buying a game that can’t even run on your setup will give you sleepless nights thanks to buyer’s remorse.

To check for the game’s minimum requirements, you can simply head to the Steam Store page. Alternatively, you can head to an online benchmarking website that automatically checks for your specs!

Update your Graphics Drivers

Suffering from the GT102 error code and GT100? If you’re wondering what that means – it’s usually referring to trouble with your graphics drivers. Most of the time, the issue just simply lies in outdated software.

To fix this issue – it’s as simple as updating your graphics drivers. The quickest way to do so is by using the Window’s Control Panel. First, open the control panel, and select device manager. Afterward, select your graphics card, right-click and select the update graphics drivers options.

The other alternative is to use the 3rd party software included with your GPUs. Simply boot up the menu, and select search for an update.

Now if you’ve gone through both methods and the game still fails – then you’ll have to do a clean install. Head over to the manufacturer’s website, select the driver appropriate for your GPU model, and download.

Run the .exe file. From there, the installer should give you installation options. Don’t use the automatic setup – select “Clean Install”. This will remove any old drivers that may conflict with the installation of the update.

You’ll find the drivers on AMD’s and NVIDIA’s websites!

Verify File Integrity

Perhaps the Locusts decided to swarm your hard drive and dismantle all the installation files. If you get a warning/popup that tells you some file is missing, the easiest fix here is to verify the file integrity!

For those who purchased the game on Steam, here’s how to do it. First right-click the game in your library, open up properties, and select “Verify file integrity”.

For those who ordered the game on the Microsoft store, unfortunately, there’s no easy way to fix this. You’ll just have to do a fresh install – crude I know, but gotta work with what we have!

Protect it (from your Anti-Virus)

Woah there McAfee/Avast/Windows Defender/generic anti-virus! Gears Tactics isn’t here to steal my credit card information. You know how it is with anti-viruses – they’re very uptight about brand new software. Though they protect your PC they can be a bit overzealous.

If you suspect your anti-virus is the cause of the crashes, here’s the way to fix this. Simply open up the menu of your anti-virus, select “Virus & Threat Protection”. If you find Gears Tactics in there, make sure to take it out of quarantine and list it as an exception.

Performance Issues

Suffering from inconsistent frames? Hate it when a glorious, bloody execution turns into a terrible PowerPoint animation? Here are some fixes for the terrible frame rates and other performance issues.

Lower your Graphics Settings

I hope in the future I never have to say this again – it always hurts when I do. But if your PC is on the lower end of the spectrum – please don’t try to run this game with anti-isotropic filtering, V-Sync, and ray tracing. You’ll get pretty-looking pictures surely, but it a horrible game experience.

Besides, I’d rather play with pixelated blood if it means a smooth gameplay experience.

Turn off all other apps

You want your PC to be just as focused as you are on the combat situation. If you’re publishing videos, leaving 20 browser tabs open, or have 7 different overlays, it’s sure to take up valuable processing power. This means less processing power for your game, and as a result, you get choppy frames.

The fix is simple. Make sure to turn off all other background applications. Closing your Internet browser is a click away. For overlays, that simply involves just opening settings and turning off Overlay functions.

Turn off Variable Rate Shading and Async Compute

It’s ironic these settings were designed to help increase performance, but are sometimes the cause of performance troubles. If you’re not too sure as to what these are, here’s a couple of quick definitions:

Variable Rate Shading – rendering technique where GPUs use different amounts of processing power to render one frame. So the “simpler” parts of the image are given less processing power, while “complex” parts are given higher priority.

Async Compute – rather than sequentially processing tasks, async compute allows a GPU to use its individual cores to complete these tasks simultaneously.

Now for some systems, these features aren’t as optimized just yet. So test it out and try gaming with these features off.

Adjust GPU settings on 3rd Party Software

You can definitely get a boost in frame rate by lowering graphics settings on your GPUs. To do so, simply open up the companion software, and depending on the manufacturer you’ll do the following:

NVIDIA Control Panel – head over to global settings, and select 3D settings. Make sure to set Image Sharpening and Low latency mode to off, and also set threaded optimization on.

AMD Control Panel – similar to NVIDIA, head over to Global graphics. From there you’ll be given a plethora of options to tweak. Make sure to turn off OpenGL Triple buffering, Radeon Chill, Morphologic filtering, Image Sharpening, Frame Rate Target Control, Radeon Anti-lag, and Radeon boost.

After tweaking the GPU’s companion app, just run the game and bingo – your frame rates should be much higher!
