The RE3 Remake is a fantastic reboot, as long as you are able to get past the crash errors such as “Corrupt Disc Error”, “Fatal Application Exit”, and other performance issues. In this guide, we compiled verified working solutions for you.
Resident Evil 3 Remake Crash, Stuttering, And Fixes
Let’s get into it, shall we? If you’re encountering a specific problem, you may skim through the table of contents below. Otherwise, we encourage you to read the through the whole article to ensure all bases are covered.
Fatal Application Exit
I would say the Fatal Application Exit is the number one error in most people’s list. This is something we saw a lot in the RE2 Remake as well (pictured above). It is a notorius crash error resulting from GPU limiations or overclocking. Here’s how you can fix it.
Underclock your GPU
If you overclocked your GPU, the first thing you should do is to underclock it. As with any activity involving overriding your GPU settings, please be very careful with this. However, this is the number one solution for many of our testers.
If your GPU is not overclocked then use MSI Afterburner and reduce the clock speed bu 100 MHz. Ideally, you won’t need to reduce more than 200 MHz to fix this RE3 Fatal Application Exit error.
Increase your page file size in Windows
Multiply your installed RAM by 1024 and then 1.5 to get your minimum page file size in MB. For example: 8GB RAM x 1024 x 1.5 = 12,288 MB. For our test, we set our maxmimum to 14,336 MB which is 2GB more.
For Nvidia users: Set Max FPS Limit to 30
Open Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings. Select the game from the drop-down menu and if it isn’t on the list then add it. Next, look for “Max FPS Limit” and lock the game at 30 FPS to reduce GPU load. You may also do a trial and error test to see how much Max FPS your GPU can handle without getting the “Fatal Application Exit” error.
Corrupt Disc Error
If you are only getting the Corrupt Disc Error, luck is on your side as this is a really simple fix if you are using Steam. Here are two ways to address this error:
Turn off pre-order DLC in Steam
Go to your Steam library and turn-off the pre-order DLC. After completing your download, turn on the DLC. This will usually fix the error. If not, read on.
Delete corrupted files and Verify Game Files on Steam
Another way to fix this by deleting corrupted files and re-downloading them. Go to your Steam install folder > logs > content_log and croll down to “failed to write” and it’ll have the path to the corrupted file. Follow the path to the file and delete it. Verify game files and it’ll download the file you just deleted. Once that is done, start the game.
RE3 Remake Crashes When Launching The Game
One of the most annoying things is having waited for your long RE3 Remake download to complete and the game just keeps crashing when you start it. Luckily we have a few tried and tested fixes you can try.
Disable UseOptimizeShader
go to Resident Evil 3 Remake’s install folder and open “re3_config.ini”. Look for “UseOptimizeShader” and disabled it. The game will stop searching at launch and will start working as intended.
Check “Run This Program As Administrator”
Right-click on the game’s exe > properties > Compatibility tab > check “run this program as administrator”. Apply the change, start the game and it should launch.
Temporarily disable your anti-virus program and check firewall settings
your anti-virus software, Windows Defender, or Firewall blocking the game’s exe by falsely detecting as a Trojan. Either disable your anti-virus and Firewall or exclude RE3 Remake’s install folder from your anti-virus, Windows Defender, and Firewall. Verify game file then start the game and it’ll launch without any crash.
Update Windows 10
It sounds silly, but this is often an overlooked solution. New game releases usually require updated Windows 10 to run properly and won’t launch on an outdated OS. If you’re not familiar with updating, an easy way to do this is to type “Windows Update” on your Windows search bar.
Opt out of the Windows Insider Program
Quite an unusual fix, but if you are part of the Windows Insider program, that might be causing the RE3 Remake to crash as reported by some. Opt out of the program and check if this resolves your issue.
Sound Issues: No Audio, Stuttering Audio
Another common issue with Resident Evil 3 Remake are sound issues. If you are getting either no audio or stuttering audio, or both, try these solutions.
Check “Loudness Equalization” in your system sound settings
In Windows 10, open Settings > System > Sound > click on “Sound Control Panel”. Select your active audio device > properties > Enhancements tab > check “loudness equalization”. Apply the change, start the game and check if the audio issues are fixed.
Disable in-game v-sync and enable it externally instead
Start RE3 Remake, go to your in-game settings, and disable in-game v-sync (short for vertical sync) and enable it through Nvidia Control Panel. If you are still facing audio stuttering then set the v-sync to “Fast”. This usually fix sound stuttering issues.
Turn off Windows Sonic For Headphones
In Windows 10, open Settings > System > Sound > click on “Sound Control Panel”. Select your active audio device > properties > Spatial Sound tab > select off. Apply the changes and check if you can now hear audio problem in-game.
MSVCP120.dll Not Found Or Missing
This a super common error for Windows systems, which can cause crashes, errors, and black screens. To fix this, simply uninstall Microsoft VC redistributable from your PC and download the latest versions of Visual C++ Redistributables and install them. After doing this, you should be able to start your game without any issues.
Easy Black Screen Fix
You launch the game and you are instantly met with a black screen while the game audio continues to play. Does this sound familiar? What you need here as a quick resolution fix. When you get the black screen, press “Alt + Enter” which will bring you to windowed mode. Now, you can go to your in-game settings and change the resolution to your monitor’s native resolution. Hit “Alt + Enter” again to return to full screen view.
Performance Fixes: FPS Boost And Reduce Stuttering
First of all: can your computer actually run RE3 Remake? Make sure you meet the minimum system requirements:
- OS: WINDOWS® 7, 8.1, 10 (64-BIT Required)
- Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-4460 or AMD FX™-6300 or better
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 760 or AMD Radeon™ R7 260x with 2GB Video RAM
- DirectX: Version 11
Close all background applications
The next step in trying to address any graphics hiccups is to make sure nothing else is running in the background. You can use Windows’ task manager to quickly end tasks and processes.
Install the latest GPU drivers, but try rolling back as well
GPU drivers can be really tricky. Usually a quick GPU driver update solves most performance issues. However, ironically, some players report issues with the latest drivers so if you encounter this, try rolling back drivers to previous versions instead.
Use DirectX 11 instead of DX12
Another tricky thing to navigate is DirectX. At this point, I think it’s safe to say that DX11 is still more stable and smoother than DX12. We do hope the latest version will get more stability fixes in the future.
Adjust Nvidia settings
You might have to noodle around your Nvidia settings if FPS issues persist. Do the following:
- Set v-sync or Vertical Sync to “On”
- Set “Power Management Mode” to “Prefer Maximum Performance”
- Set “Texture Filtering- Quality” to “High Performance”
Adjust in-game v-sync settings
Start RE3 Remake, go to your in-game settings, and disable in-game v-sync (short for vertical sync) and enable it through Nvidia Control Panel. If you are still facing graphics stuttering, set the v-sync to “Fast”.
Brightness Issues And Faded Visuals
If you are experiencing this, you are having an HDR issue. Unfortunately, until a patch is made, the only way to fix this is by not playing the game in HDR or by using the in-game reshade settings to adjust brightness and contrast.
Controller Issues: Accidentally Firing Weapons
A notorious control bug causes Jill to suddenly fire her gun. Unfortunately, until a patch is released to address this, the only option to avoid this issue is to use your keyboard and mouse.
Error 0xc000007b
You might be getting this specific crashing error in Resident Evil 3 Remake: “This application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b).” This is usually an error with Nvidia drivers, and a quick driver update should fix it.
Game Won’t Save
To our Russian readers: if you are customizing your save game path, please make sure you only use the Latin alphabet letters. The game won’t save in folder paths containing Russian letters.
“Insufficient Memory” Error
Here are the top reasons why you might be getting this error in Resident Evil 3 Remake:
- The game does not have enough RAM available to use.
- There is not enough space for the paging file on the hard disk (see fix above)
- You have adjusted the size of the paging file yourself (either you have disabled it or used software)
